Big dog or small woman?

I found this picture online, but have seen it many times before. I thought I would post it for those of you not familiar with just how big Great Danes really get to be.

Granted, this guy is definitely at the larger end of the scale, the picture said he was almost 200 lbs, but our first boy Kaiser was right at 190 lbs when he died.

Great Danes come in 6 colours that are recognized here in North America. And by 'recognized' I mean the ability to show. This guy is a Harlequin - white coat with patches of black. I don't know who this fellow belongs to, but he's obviously from North America as his ears are cropped. I would love to have a Harle, but there isn't a good Harle breeder within a 1000 miles of us. Not to say that we're not pleased as punch with our brindle boy! We love his cool tiger stripes :-)

As every Dane owner will tell you, it's a good thing these giants are so gentle and laid back, seeing as they get to be the size of a full grown adult man!

Good post. Dylan comes from Harli Breeding & isn't recognised as a show colour here either (not that I have the time to show my babies)

Someone told me Harli's tend to be the largest of the Dane colours but any colour is BIG!

Dylan was 8 stone at six months old

Wow! You know, now that I think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a GD in person....they're beautiful. Can we see pics of your baby?

How could you NOT love a dog that is used as the model for Scooby Doo? A former colleague of mine had two Harlequin Great Danes; they were so lovable and goofy. It was clear they adored her.

Sgt Dub that was hilarious!

And now I can see why they are called "great" danes! Would love to see a cat next to him for even more of a proportionate view!

I have to start taking pictures of Mattie so I have a record of him being 'little'. He's so big already that I can barely slide him off my spot on the couch!

And yes, Claire, we need a full sized shovel and a wheelbarrow around here for the pooper scooping!

You can take your turn when you come to Canada :P

thats one big-a dog. Sheeesh..

I though my lab was big enough (185 lbs) how much do these weigh? And with that said, how much do they EAT???

lol

Kai said...

Holy moly! Your lab was 185lbs??

Male Danes are 160+ around these parts - usually in the 180 range. When Kaiser was full grown, I think he was eating about 10-12 cups of kibble per day. That added up to two bags per month at $50 per bag.

Not cheap.

I actually switched Kaiser to the raw diet when he got sick to see if it would help - it certainly helped with the dog food bill and the clean up in the yard!

Mattie is eating about 7 cups of kibble (spread out over 3 meals) per day.

I used to take my Greyhound, Angel, to a dog park in the area and she loved to play with the local Dane. He drawfed her, but they would run and tussle. I always walked away wishing I had brought a camera.

I would never get a dog-horse. No, not me. The only great dane I ever knew was nicknamed Devil Dog because he was so evil. Everyone says they are babies, but this one was not.
